Background
The Department for International Development (DFID) is the branch of the British government dedicated to eliminating world poverty (www.dfid.gov.uk). Its largest programme is in India – home to a third of the world’s poor.The high incidence of poverty in India is not widely understood in the UK, and can often be hidden behind glossy images. In collaboration with others, the Communication Adviser will build a stronger public understanding of this challenge and explain how DFID activities make a difference.
Reason for Hire
This position will support the delivery of DFID India’s mission and priorities through effective communication. Reporting to the Head of Policy Coherence and Communications, this is a new post to lead the management and delivery of DFID’s ambitions on strategic communication.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The Communication Adviser will support DFID India’s country plan by developing and then delivering a communication strategy, including producing and placing communication products that are clear and simple .H/She will be required to support the office in professionalizing its approach, working closely with the British High Commission.
The successful applicant, besides developing communications strategy, will have to manage media interactions, work with audiences in both the UK and India to deliver DFID’s development agenda and help DFID India use communication more strategically to deliver its objectives. The ideal candidate should have strong professional skills combined with ambitious vision and a strong drive to deliver change.
Skills and competencies:
• The incumbent will have to be a strong communicator with excellent organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines.
• H/she must also be able to work independently and be confident in dealing with very senior people.
• H/she should have a proven track record of producing effective, well - targeted plain English publications and messages to target specific audiences.
• H/she will be expected to demonstrate:
an understanding of audience research, communication channels, and evaluation techniques and how these can contribute to effective business performance.
ability to use qualitative and quantitative data and source material to form clear messages and content.
clear examples of strong abilities to communicate and develop effective working relationships with partners
• Should have excellent writing skills and a track record of understanding complex issues then translating these to simple and effective messages
• Should have a strong commitment to continued professional development and a willingness to learn about DFID’ s work
• The ability to work on tight deadlines and deliver quality outputs.
• Experience of having worked with international media especially print media would be a distinct advantage.
• Graduate degree in marketing, public relations, communications or journalism.
