Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India Awarded by Government

MEIRA KUMAR PRESENTS ‘VAYOSHRESHTHA SAMMAN’ AWARDS

The Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Smt. Meira Kumar conferred Vayoshreshtha Samman on the eminent senior Citizens in New Delhi today. Speaking on the occasion, she said that the Vayoshreshtha Samman was just a modest recognition of their compassion., determination creativity and devotion to the cause of humanity and to honour their relentless and remarkable service to the society and nation. She further said that the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has already launched National Policy on Older Persons (NPOP) to ensure active and productive ageing by involving a framework for providing financial, medical, social and emotional support. The Ministry has also formulated a law ‘Care and Maintenance of Older People’ which is being considered by Parliamentary Committee. In the proposed Bill, the basic thrust to maintenance, care and protection and setting up of Tribunals for every district, which will take care of claiming payments of maintenance from the grand children, she added. The Awardees were presented with shawls, citations and mementoes in the function. To create wider awareness about the issues a ‘Meghdoot Postcard’ with picture and slogan was also released by Smt. Meira Kumar. The Secretary of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Dr. Veena Chhotray was also present on the occasion.

This year Vayoshreshtha Samman for Institution of Knowledge was given to Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India from Kerala, while Chikmagalur Rotary and Inner Wheel Trust, Jeevan Sandhya was given the Award for Institution of Service. Shri J.L.Dalal from Haryana was conferred the Vayoshreshtha Samman for Centenarian this year. Smt. Mdhobi Mukherjee, a renowned actress from Calcutta got the Samman for creative art and nonagenarian. Prof. Turaga Somasundaram from Hyderabad was given Vayoshreshtha Samman for lifetime achievement. Shri H. Ramegowda, a 75 year Athlete from Karnataka and 83 years old Football Player Shri Shailen Manna from Kolkatta awards in the category for Sport person. For Economic Leadership category the Vayoshreshtha Samman was bestowed upon Shri T.V. Narayana Shastry.

Earlier in the Day, a seminar “ Addressing the Challenges and Opportunities of Aging: Empowering Older Persons’, was organized by the National Institute of Social Defence and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
