Bhopal gets Asia's first child rights observatory

Taking a leap forward for the cause of children, the United Nations' Children Fund (Unicef) has launched a Child Rights Observatory here in the capital city of Madhya Pradesh.

The observatory launched Thursday is the first of its kind in India as well as in Asia that will help children realise their rights.

'Madhya Pradesh is faced with several challenges with regard to women and children of the state, and the observatory will go a long way in bringing out a report on situation of children in the state,' said Hamid El Bashir, Unicef state representative.

Governor Balram Jhakar, who was present at the observatory launching function, expressed concern over the plight of children and called upon the society to help them.

Several activists working for children said poor children have to work at a very young age to help their families financially. But in many cases, these little children work in factories in hazardous conditions for very small wages, they said.

Though the government has enacted laws against child labour to prevent children less than 14 years of age from being employed in hazardous occupations, it has remained difficult to meet the objective, they said.

'The aim of the observatory is to place the issue of children rights at the centre of the state policy', said Nirmala Buch, president of the observatory.

'It will also monitor situation of children and implementation of UN Convention of Child Rights in the state, besides pushing for higher priority for children in all government policies at all levels,' she added.
